Pink Beds

The Pink Beds Loop Trail in Pisgah National Forest may be the most relaxing and peaceful hike I’ve experienced in the last few years. Although it’s elevation is at 3,200 ft. and just below the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is a relatively flat hike and easy to navigate.

The 5 mile trail follows a series of bridges and boardwalks along several small streams. A few meadows create openings to see surrounding mountains, and rhododendrons often lean over the trail - creating shady natural tunnels that provide shade.

According to the National Park Service, “The Pink Beds Valley was named by settlers who first cleared the area when abundant blooms of summer rhododendron and mountain laurel were visible from the surrounding mountainsides.”

I hiked the trail in early April and focused my camera on the meadows and the light… and the thin shadows cast by the morning sun.
