Coastal Snow
Snow isn’t something most people associate with the beach. It is, however, something I have experienced a few times while visiting the Outer Banks during the winter months.
In 2005 while I was visiting the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, a winter snow storm blew over and dumped 6 inches of snow up and down the coast. You’d be amazed how quiet and surreal the landscape becomes along NC12 when the road and dunes are covered in snow.
In 2025, I drove again to the Outer Banks during another winter storm, this time with a much nicer camera and a more focused creative vision. Although the snow melted more quickly than in 2005, I was still able to capture a few disappearing drifts while hiking over the dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. It’s curious how sand can seem bright white on a hot summer day, but completely different and much darker as snow slowly melts into it during the middle of winter.
